I have neglected my website for the past year and a half! Oh my! It has been a wonderful year filled with dreams, accomplishments, surprises and growth! Not to mention struggles along the way! Here I am, living the life I love full of adventure. In the past year and a half we have welcomed in two new artists into our studio www.lydiaboss.com and www.hjsculpture.com which brought positive creative change in the space! Summer 2015 was a summer of challenge, growth and strength. I was fortunate to attend Pilchuck Glass School twice last summer. One session as a teaching assistant for the beautiful and talented Kelly O'Dell www.kellyodellglass.com which was an incredible experience that taught me about friendship, love, dedication and loyalty. I received a scholarship from the Paperweight Collectors Association of Texas which funded my journey as a student at Pilchuck for the first time! I began my newest adventure in glass in a flame working with borosilicate class taught by accomplished Seattle artists Patricia Davidson and Karen Buhler. I was honored to receive an 8 day residency at the Tacoma Museum of Glass which presented a true test of resilience and strength! I created a new body of work and challenged myself more then ever before in the glass studio. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone resulted in some quirky looking work as well as my most favorite glass sculptures I have made in my career. I look forward to sharing it with the world in the near future. So stay tuned! This past January I was 1 of 10 artists around the world invited to Bullseye Glass in Portland to take part in a 6 day intensive for glass educators and artists. If you know me well, you know that I am a total geek when it comes to kiln forming, so it was a dream come true. Finally, the best part of my year is that my best friend and wonderfully sweet partner, Mikey, asked me to marry him. I can't imagine sharing these journeys and all to come with anyone else. So where have I been? Just a busy bee enjoying the sweet nectar of life... a queen is born... @queenbeeglass
I am excited to extend the invitation to our first open studio in the new space in Inscape Arts (INS) Building in Seattle's International District this Sunday, Dec. 7th from 1-6pm. The INS is located near the stadiums across the street from Uwajimaya. This is an event that is taking place building wide, so come down to check out our space in the basement, B28, as well as visit the 50+ artists that we share the building with. The INS is an old immigration prison, so it is a really interesting place to check out! We will have handmade gifts and baked goods for your holiday shopping needs and the hot shop will be lit with some fun demonstrations happening! Please come to support the artists of the INS and check out the work of Mikey Cozza (www.michaelcozzaglass.com), Brennan Kasperzak (www.brennankasperzak.com), and Ali Vandegrift (www.aliveglass.etsy.com) and myself... who will all have original work for your viewing pleasure! It has been awhile since I have posted in here! A lot has happened this year! I recently moved my studio into Inscape Arts, a really wonderful building in Seattle's International District. I share the space with my partner, Mikey Cozza (www.michaelcozzaglass.com) and our friend Brennan Kasperzak. I am really excited about new work I am creating that I have yet to publish live to my site as it is all in progress. I am hopeful the work will start to come together these next few months and I will be ready to share! The work came to fruition while I was a teaching assistant at Pilchuck Glass School for Shelley and Rik Allen's sculpting class earlier this summer.
The photos above are from a demo I did last week at Pilchuck. I was flattered to be invited by Raven Skyriver to be a visiting artist during his hot sculpting glass, session 5. I was welcomed by an energetic group of students that were eager to watch me complete a large honey bee with his amazing TA's and some very dear friends there to back me up. It was truly an awarding experience and I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to challenge myself in such a supportive and inspiring environment like Pilchuck! This is a close up documenting several stages of my process necessary to creating my butterflies. I have been focusing my energy the past couple months on finishing a collection of butterflies that are at least three layers of color. These are certainly the most complex layering of pattern and color I have done. I really had a wonderful experience designing and carving each of these pieces. They were all very challenging, and with that I discovered so much more about sand carving techniques as well as color behavior when carving and kiln working. Please check out my butterflies in my portfolio to see the finished work. I have submitted several of those images to Emerge 2014, Bullseye Glass' kiln glass exhibition for emerging artists. I will keep you posted! Wish me luck! Inspiration... Design... This is a shot of my studio in a warehouse in Seattle's SoDo District.
